Fusarium Resistance in Young Seedlings of Interspecific Hybrids of Temperate Cymbidium Species

Abstract
Fusarium resistance was studied with three temperate Cymbidium hybrids obtained originally from rhizome culture: Cym. kanran ¡¿ Cym. goeringii, Cym. kanran ¡¿ Cym. misericors, Cym. kanran ¡¿ Cym. lancifolium and their parents. Shoot and root growth of these hybrids were found to be considerably greater than those of their parents. Three Cymbidium hybrids showed less number of stomata in the leaves than their parents. To evaluate disease resistance to pathogen, Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cattleyea was applied to Cymbidium hybrids and their parents. Three hybrids were more viable than their parents 60 days after the treatment showing heterotic effect on resistance to the Fusarium infection. In a study of antioxidant enzymes, the activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD), peroxidase (POD), catalase (CAT) were higher in hybrids than those of the parents. Malondialdehyde (MDA) content of the hybrids were lower than their parents
